The Art of Catching
No defensive player handles the baseball more than the catcher, or has a better view of the field and action, or is more important to the confidence of a pitcher, or plays a bigger role in preventing unearned runs. Though skilled catchers are highly coveted by high school and college coaches, the position tends to be underappreciated in youth baseball, with youth catchers often receiving inadequate coaching and encouragement.
Bonnain Baseball Academy’s three-hour, The Art of Catching clinic gives young catchers the focused teaching they deserve. As we do with pitchers, we teach a proper warm-up routine and conditioning program to promote long-term arm health and performance, including a sound throwing progression and long toss. We also instruct our catchers in position-specific exercises to build leg and core strength and for knee protection. The clinic covers the catcher’s set-up, footwork, receiving, framing, and blocking. We teach catchers how to handle common game situations on an age-appropriate basis, including steal attempts, positioning for plays at home plate, and defensive back-up responsibilities. Students will also learn the importance of communicating with and protecting plate umpires, calling pitches, coordinating with the dugout, and being a good partner to their pitchers.
